To conjugate regular -er and -ir verbs in the imperfect, simply drop the ending (-er or -ir) and add one of the following:
The imperfect tense may be considered the present tense backshifted into past time.
The preterit tends to “freeze” an action or state in past time, or to view it as over and done with.
